Harmonics in Low-voltage Three-phase Four-wire Electric Distribution Systems and Filtering Solutions
Presentation slides from the February 13, 2001 Internet Seminar. Abstract: Proliferation of single-phase non-linear power electronic loads has resulted in excessive harmonic current in today's three-phase four-wire low-voltage power distribution systems. This seminar will outline some of the potential problems caused by these harmonics in phases and neutral conductors and will examine passive and active filtering solutions.

Black and Blue: The California Electricity Restructuring Saga
Presentation slides from the February 20, 2001 seminar. Abstract: This presentation will review the major reasons for the “dismal and dangerous situation” in California. The focus will be on the market developments and their interaction with the regulatory initiatives. The experience to date will be assessed in terms of key issues in market redesign and supply availability. The importance of the California developments to the restructuring across the nation will be discussed.

Use of Planning Studies to Estimate Security Margins in Real-Time
In this presentation, the possibility of more fully exploiting planning studies is discussed. The detailed planning studies are recorded and a fast pattern matching approach is applied to estimate system limits. Critical elements of such an approach are developed and numerical results on the WSCC system are presented. These are the presentation slides from the September 11, 2001 Internet seminar.

The Future of Distribution Systems in the Deregulated Environment: Opportunities and Challenges
Restructuring of the electric utility industry is causing widespread changes in the power distribution sector. There is an increasing customer demand for high-quality power delivered with great reliability. A variety of technological solutions are being developed and perfected to cater to these demands. In the first part of the talk the changes taking place due to deregulation will be delineated. The second part will focus on identifying the opportunities and challenges from a technological point of view. These are the presentation slides from the March 6, 2001 Internet Seminar.

Incorporating Physical Constraints and Transaction Costs into Option-Based Valuation of Real Assets
In the vertical integrated utility industry generation assets were traditionally valued using production simulation coupled with discounted cash flow analysis. With the emergence of the electric industry restructuring market- based approaches employing “real options” valuation techniques are gaining popularity. Financial option based valuation methods employ financial instruments as models of generation assets (e.g. Spark Spread call options) while abstracting physical constraints and transaction costs. Here we explicitly consider physical operating constraints and transaction costs in an approximate way to examine the impact of such aspects on the valuation. These are the Power Point slides from the PSERC Internet Seminar on January 23, 2001.
